Samford Lives for National TV, Beats UNCG
What a second half, what a game as Samford proves to the rest of the Southern Conference, the title is ours to lose. Samford wins another national television game with a 78-69 win over the UNCG Spartans. These Bulldogs battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit and used their defense to close the gap in the second half.
Can Samford play every game on national TV?
In the first half, it felt that UNCG could do no wrong. Keyshaun and Kobe Langley could not miss. On Samford’s side, Achor Achor picked up a third personal foul after a double technical. AJ Staton-McCray had zero points.
Things changed for the better for Samford in the second half, the Langley brothers combined for one made three. Achor never picked up another foul and AJ Staton-McCray made a big three with 2:55 in the half to push the Samford lead to 8.
Samford also picked up the defensive play in the second half holding UNCG to just 36% shooting. For the Bulldogs, they shot 60%. Since head coach Bucky McMIllan challenged the team’s defense following the win over Wofford, they stepped up again leading Samford to their fourth straight win.
Jaden Campbell led the way with 17 points and in his second game back, Jermaine Marshall scored 16 points in 12 minutes of play. Achor Achor got to play a good portion of the second half and also had 16 points with seven rebounds.
Following tonight’s win, Samford now has a two game lead in the Southern Conference standings with their biggest road challenge out of the way. Samford firmly sits in the driver’s seat to win the SoCon regular season title. There is still a lot of basketball left, so let’s revisit this in a couple weeks.
Samford is at VMI on Saturday. Then back for another national TV game, this time at home against Western Carolina on Valentine’s Day.
